Magic: The Gathering Players Can Choose Either An African Or European Swallow With 'Monty Python & The Holy Grail' Deck
If you've ever been in a 'fandom' before, you're probably already familiar with many of the ins and outs that come with it. Chances are, if you're enjoying a fun game or dissecting a well-regarded movie or TV show, there's bound to be a huge following that appreciates the interest just as much (if not more so). Naturally, with so many different franchises to get hooked on, it's not unexpected for many self-proclaimed nerds to be 'members' of multiple fandoms. While there may be contrasts of content, however, that never stops the communities from spreading their running gags and inside jokes all over the internet.
Magic: The Gathering players may have finally found their match when it comes to the inside joke aspect, as Wizards of The Coast has found a new property to have a crossover with: Monty Python and the Holy Grail! Now players suffering from 'mana flood' and bad draws can cope with their subpar deck-building skills by debating the aerodynamic physics of unladen swallows with their opponent.

Senior Product Designer for the Secret Lair expansion, Daniel Nguyen, explains that a lot of the crossover work that goes into a release such as this one is often one of artistic merit, rather than one focused solely on game mechanics. “I take it very seriously. We think deeply about everything that goes into these drops. Every aspect you can consider, I’m thinking about that all day long and losing sleep over it sometimes.”
Much like the quest for the Holy Grail, finding all of the special crossover cards may be a lot harder than it initially seems. The Secret Lair expansions to Magic: The Gathering that features the tie-in will have two different volumes, with a total of eight different Monty Python themed cards and three tokens split between them. Aside from the double-sided African Swallow/European Swallow card, the crossover also features other memorable scenes and characters from the cult classic film, including Tim the Enchanter, The Black Knight (fittingly represented by the card 'Tis But A Scratch!'), and "The Bridge Of Death". Humorously enough, the latter card flaunts the ability to tap two of each mana type (white, black, blue, red, and green), plus the card itself, to make the opponent automatically lose the game. A good response to the riddle, "What can counter a blue-counter deck?"
The new Magic: The Gathering drops will be available on July 29th.
