First 15 Minutes Of ‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Shown At CinemaCon
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse was a massive hit when it came out in 2018, and it even went on to win Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Naturally, Sony greenlit a sequel. Earlier this year, fans were gifted with a teaser trailer for the new film. The trailer featured Miles Morales reuniting with Gwen Stacy, and even showed a confrontation between Miles and Oscar Isaac’s Spider-Man 2099, who was teased at the end of the first film. The teaser left off with the title Across the Spider-Verse: Part One Recently, fans got another look at the new film at CinemaCon this past week.
At CinemaCon, Sony showed off the first 15 minutes of Across the Spider-Verse. The footage was comprised of rough sketches and CGI, but it still looked incredibly promising. The sequel will feature the return of Shameik Moore as Miles Morales (Ultimate Spider-Man) and Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy (Spider-Gwen). It will also fully introduce Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O'Hara (Spider-Man 2099).

The scene opens on Earth 65, with Gwen meeting Spider-Man 2099 before they are swept away by an enormous bird. Spider-Man 2099 battles with it as they go. Jessica Drew, played by Issa Rae, appears as a friend of O’Hara’s. As Jessica Drew is also the alter-ego of Spider-Woman, it is likely she will be suiting up as well. A helicopter falls out of the sky, and Gwen and Miguel use their webs to keep it from causing massive damage.
Later, Gwen is confronted by her father, who is a police officer. She states that she “did not kill Peter,” and pleads with him to believe her since she is his daughter. However, he simply begins to read her Miranda Rights. The footage ends with a transition to another universe where Miles and his parents are meeting with Miles’ principal. Miles’ spidey sense starts tingling, and he dashes off before the principal tells his parents that Miles has been lying to them.
Christ Miller and Phil Lord, who directed the first film, went on stage to introduce the footage, explained a bit about the new film, and poked a little fun at Sony Pictures’ CEO Tom Rothman:
“We don’t have a sizzle reel. Here’s a secret. Please don’t tell Tom this. Just say Whoo! We were too busy making the movie. We told him it would be the same size as the last one but we couldn’t do it. It’s the largest crew of an animated movie ever. This movie has 1,000 people working on it. Don’t tell Tom. The number of characters. This movie has 240 characters. Please don’t tell Tom. It takes place in sic universes. That’s why we couldn’t do the sizzle reel.”
With everything they are promising, the film seems to be shaping up to be a massive event on a scale of something akin to Avengers: Endgame. This could be the reason behind the film’s delays. Originally slated for an October 7 release of this year, it has since been pushed back to June 2, 2023. However, they did reveal what the title of the third Spider-Verse film would be. Instead of just Across the Spider-Verse: Part 2, the film will now be called Beyond the Spider-Verse. All things considered, it is nice that they are taking their time to make a truly stunning animated feature that is worth the wait rather than speeding towards a deadline. There will also surely be more surprises in store. Tom Rothman himself may have said it best. In reference to the film and the competition, he said, “Watch the [expletive] out!”
