Lucasfilm Animation and Industrial Light and Magic have just announced the closure of the Singapore VFX facility. Created in 2004, the team is responsible for Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.

Lucasfilm Animation is housed (along with Disney Southeast Asia) in a specially designed building nicknamed “The Sandcrawler,” mimicking the Jawa transport. It has Star Destroyer-style interiors and a Yoda fountain. There were signs that Lucasfilm might be moving out back in 2021 when they sold the building to The Blackstone Group, but they stayed at the Sandcrawler despite the buyout, working on movies like Marvel’s Eternals and Jurassic World Dominion. Now, however, ILM has announced that it’s moving out for good. This closure has led to 300 job losses.

The Singapore Studio also ran The Jedi Masters Program, which partnered young artists with Lucasfilm Animation’s professionals, providing them with classroom instruction as well as industry experience. The loss of this program will be a big blow to anyone in Southeast Asia looking to break into animation.

In a statement to the press, Disney has said: “Over the next several months, ILM will be consolidating its global footprint and winding down its Singapore studio due to economic factors affecting the industry.”

Industrial Light and Magic has bases in Vancouver, London, Sydney, and Mumbai, and it's hoped that some of the Singapore staff will be able to relocate, as it will be sad to lose the talent that created much of the canon and characters that The Mandoverse is based on. Disney has a lot to thank them for.
