LEGO Updated Its IDEAS Franchise Roster And More News
What a time to be a LEGO fan. The sheer number of possibilities to make things with LEGO and the franchises they continue to bring into their umbrella doesn’t show signs of stopping.
Wednesday, LEGO announced through their Ideas blog that they are expanding their roster of IPs that they are allowing under the Ideas possibilities by 250 IPs, and they launched a new challenge for Ideas members.
For the uninitiated, the LEGO Ideas program is a sort of LEGO licensed kickstarter where members can propose and design new sets from their favorite IP, or an original idea that doesn’t exist yet as a set. When a member submits an Idea proposal, it’s up to the originator to build awareness of their project and gain supporters. The more supporters it gets, and the longer it’s active, the more likely it could become an official LEGO set.

Now, the list of IPs that LEGO has officially vetted and cleared for proposal has grown by about 250. A search for a comprehensive list took me to Reddit, where there’s a list (not sure how official it is) that encompasses nearly 420 IPs that are approved by LEGO for people to propose projects for. Starfox 64 is on there. Stargate Atlantis. Even The Tonight Show is on there.
Furthermore, under the Ideas program, they have themed challenges. Wednesday, when they announced the expansion, they also said to stay tuned on Friday for a new challenge. Today, it was revealed that the challenge is to build a 90s nostalgia-based set. There’s two size competitions. A larger 5000-brick-limit set of a 90s movie or show, and a smaller 1000-brick-limit set of a 90s show or movie scene. The winner, based on fan vote, gets their set made as an official product by LEGO. You can actually win royalties from this. 1% of all sales on the sets, as well as ten sets for yourself.
If you have the creative mindset, this is the best time to be into LEGO.
