When Chadwick Boseman died from cancer in August 2020, his star was rising, and his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Black Panther T’Challa, was set to be one of the leaders of the future of the franchise. But suddenly, plans had to change. Questions arose about how to move forward, a hot topic across the internet. But of course, it was studio president Kevin Feige’s decision.

In an interview with Empire, Feige spoke about his decision not to recast and instead lay the character to rest. Said interview is found in their November 2022 issue, which essentially kicks off the press for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

“It just felt like it was much too soon to recast,” he says.

He then invokes how Stan Lee always emphasized the relatability and real-world basis in Marvel’s comic stories

“Marvel represents the world outside your window…as extraordinary and fantastical as our characters and stories are, there’s a relatable and human element to everything… The world is still processing the loss of Chad. And Ryan poured that into the story.”

Feige and Wakanda Forever director and co-writer Ryan Coogler figured out where they wanted to go with their situation. Once they did, they set out to make a meaningful, substantial sequel that honored the late actor.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever will be released in theaters on November 11, 2022, bidding farewell to T’Challa following his third and final death.
