Josh D'Amaro Reveals Shiny, Retractable Lightsaber at South-By-Southwest, Making Fans' Dreams a Reality
Star Wars fans experienced a dream come true at the South by Southwest Film & TV Festival. After years of tinkering with the technology and finding inspiration from tape measurers, Disney’s talented Imagineers created a realistic-looking lightsaber. Disney Parks and Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro took the stage to show off the new technology.
D’Armo walked on the stage holding an empty silver hilt. Then he pressed a button and a glowing blue blade expanded out of this hilt with the familiar buzzing sound that accompanies lightsabers in Star Wars movies.

D’Amaro commented on the surrealism of the moment, “I have the coolest job in the world. I’m holding a real lightsaber.” The most impressive part of the technology is the blade is also able to retract with the same familiar noise.
Unfortunately, the item won’t be for sale due to its fragility. Some actors use the tech in the Galactic Star Cruiser Experience, a Star Wars-themed hotel at Walt Disney World. Given how much the technology has progressed, a real-life usable, but hopefully not dangerous lightsaber may be just over the horizon. In the meantime, Star Wars fans will have to stick to pretending to use the Force to open elevators and automatic doors and waging battle with toy lightsabers.
