Jon Favreau Was Very Unsure About The Decision To Kill Iron Man In ‘Endgame’
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the Russo Brothers (Joseph and Anthony) talked about their career in the movies and executive producer Jon Favreau's reaction to the death of Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame.
While commenting about Robert Downey Jr.'s dialogue prior to his snap at the end of the movie, the Russos said that "it's probably the most pressure we've ever had in trying to come up with a line in any of these movies." They wanted to give Iron Man a strong goodbye to the MCU, arguing that "you do not want to f*** up Tony Stark's last line." Not only from themselves, but this pressure also came from Jon Favreau, who was extremely surprised with the Russo's directions in Avengers and what they had planned for Iron Man. Favreau tried to convince them to change the script and the ending, saying, "it's gonna devastate people, and you don't want them walking out of the theater and into traffic." Favreau was spot on. Tony Stark's death was a shocker for everyone.
Even though that was the direction chosen for Tony Stark and the MCU's future, Iron Man's legacy was also important to them. As a result, Joseph argued, "we felt like we earned the arc that, you know, would feel redemptive, emotional and uplifting." Needless to say, since Favreau was a significant stakeholder in Iron Man's character since the beginning of the Infinity Saga (because he was a director in the first and second solo movies for the hero), his reaction wasn't easy to the Russos. However, it is possible to conclude that Favreau saw Iron Man as his creation for the MCU, and letting that part die in the end would be understandably frustrating to anyone in his position.
