Articles appeared last year discussing how Eidos Montreal was working on the next iteration of the Deus Ex series. Now there is a new job posting at the developer looking for a writer with an “academic background in South Asian studies and/or equivalent cultural knowledge” and a “background in science and/or technology.”

Deus Ex is a first-person action role-playing game set in a not-too-distant future with cyberpunk and dystopian themes. It emphasized player choice and presents options for players to approach each mission in their preferred style. The games explore issues like corporate espionage and corruption, marginalized communities, and class inequality. It also tends to lean heavily into science-fiction tropes like aliens and cybernetic augmentation. The last iteration of the franchise was in 2016 to widespread acclaim.

The clues from this job posting suggest that perhaps the game could be set in India or Pakistan as South Asia typically indicates the Indian subcontinent which includes countries like Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Nepal. It would definitely be a new direction for the series which has mostly been set in fictionalized Western and Mediterranean countries like the United States and Egypt.

It may be some time before this is confirmed as early reports last year claimed the game was still in the early stages, and game development does take years.
