The San Diego Comic-Con brought many exciting announcements and updates, one of the biggest being Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. This casting choice was kept quiet for a fair bit, making the reveal quite the surprise; this quiet was extended to friends and fellow actors. In an interview with entertainment magazine Us Weekly, Jeremy Renner opened up about how the news was received on his end.

The actor delved into his reaction, explaining, "I had no idea. The son of a bitch didn’t say anything to me. We’re good friends. There’s the Avengers family chat. The original six. He said not a peep. I got online and started blowing up his phone like, ‘What’s going on? You’ve been hiding this from us the whole time?’” There’s no love lost by any means, as Renner continued, “It’s exciting news. I’m really, really excited about it.”

Renner last portrayed a live-action Hawkeye in the 2021 Disney+ series Hawkeye. While there is no word on his official return, the actor is open to it. He explained, “You got Downey back in the mix, you got the Russo Brothers back in the mix. This is a direction where Marvel is going to do well. The Avengers movies have always been fan favorites and there’s so many wonderful characters in them.” Things are still in their early stages, and a lot is still in development. Renner acknowledged, “It’s going to be challenging to get everyone together.”  He also expressed interest in the future and the potential directions to be taken, “But I am excited about it. We’ll see. I think we’ll probably be doing it. It’s all brand new. They just made the announcement. They got to start figuring it out.” There's plenty of time for a solid plan and cast list to be hammered out.

Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for a theatrical release on May 1, 2026. Hints of the current working plot are being kept under wraps. If you’re looking forward to new Marvel movies while you wait, Captain America: Brave New World hits theaters on February 14, 2025. The film will see Sam Wilson, now fully embracing the Captain America title, tackle an international incident before things fall irreparably out of hand.
