33 Years And Out As Game Informer Looks To Close Shop

It’s been 33 years and a sector of GameStop, Game Informer, has announced they will be closing their doors. According to their X, Game Informer has been “honored to share this incredible journey” and while their company has shut down “the passion for gaming [Game Informer] has cultivated together will continue to live on.” Game Informer will live on through its workers reported receiving their severances. Though one gaming company may shut down, it does not shut down the gaming community.

Employees of Game Informer were unaware of the future layoff until that day. One employee, video lead Alex Van Aken, recounted on his X/Twitter post that while he remains unaware of what happened, and any future news will be posted on his page. Another employee, Game Informer magazine content director Kyle Hilliard, wrote that the Game Informer team was about "70% done with the next [Game Informer] issue and it was going to have a GREAT cover." As it stands, #367 will be the final issue of what was once the 3rd largest magazine in the U.S. with over 8 million copies “in the wild” according to IGN. It’s unknown if fans will see what the cover of issue #368 would have looked like.

What was once a company founded in 1991, its employees grew Game Informer into a powerhouse of exclusive knowledge and updates for the gaming community. Once one of the early pioneers of game coverage, the void Game Informer will leave behind will surely be felt. The future of its loyal patrons and workers is yet to be determined, but the gaming community shall remember all Game Informer has brought and done for them.
