Jeremy Renner Has Made His First Hawkeye Appearance Since His Accident
Marvel Studios has now dropped season two of What If…?, which began its release on December 22 on Disney+. This new season of What If…? marks the first animated series for Phase Five of the MCU Multiverse Saga, coming together with two other 2023 shows, Secret Invasion season one and Loki season two. What If…? season 2, episode 3 marks the first occasion of Jeremy Renner’s continuation with the MCU since being hospitalized after an almost fatal accident on January 1, 2023.
After months of recovery from the snowplow injury, Jeremy Renner has participated in a variety of therapies and treatments as well as spent much of his time and energy on the things that truly matter “and to live life,” as he has mentioned in a previous interview. It is possible that Renner’s lines for What If…? season two were recorded before his accident, possibly as early as summer 2022. However, not all of the 2012 Avengers team had their live-action actor counterparts contribute for this episode, so it shows a great future for Hawkeye that Renner was back in the role just as we know and love him.

We already know that Marvel Studios will release Echo in January, a spin-off of Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye, and Agatha: Darkhold Diaries in the fall, a spin-off of WandaVision. Echo continues the introduction of Maya Lopez/Echo, played by Alaqua Cox, that viewers got in Hawkeye. The show will highlight her role in both her hometown in Oklahoma and in New York City, where she will be joined by Daredevil’s titular hero, Matt Murdock, again played by Charlie Cox, and antagonist, Wilson Fisk, continuing to be played by Vincent D’Onofrio. Might there be a chance of Jeremy Renner coming back to Marvel Studios for some action there, too? We’ll soon see! Look for Echo on Disney+ on January 9, with all five episodes airing that same day. You can also find Jeremy Renner’s new musical diary, “Wait,” out on January 1.
