Back in 2017, science fiction fans were delighted with the film Blade Runner 2049. Last September, Amazon approved a TV sequel for its streaming platform. Now the franchise is borrowing from fantasy by pegging Game of Thrones director Jeremy Podewsa to direct the pilot of Blade Runner 2099 and serve as an executive producer for the series.

Blade Runner 2099 takes place fifty years after the events of 2049 and will likely feature the same tropes as the previous Blade Runner movies, although Amazon is keeping a tight lid on the details. The only official description comes from Alcon Entertainment CEOs Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who claim the series will focus on “a new realm with the provocative storyline that Silka [Luisa] has created.” Luisa will be the showrunner for 2099, while Ridley Scott joins as an executive producer.

Other notable names to join the project include Michael Green, the writer for 2049, in a non-writing executive producer role. Ben Roberts of Alcon Television, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hacket will take on producer roles. Tom Spezialy contributes his pen in the writer’s room while also functioning as an executive producer. At this time, no release date has been announced for the series.
