Jason Ritter, son of the late celebrated actor John Ritter, has recently been cast in the upcoming Max DCU series Lanterns. Lanterns will focus on the "original” Green Lantern from Earth, Hal Jordan, breaking in a new recruit, John Stewart (no relation to the comedian), to the intergalactic Green Lantern Corps while investigating murder in the American Heartland. The series is best described as a True Detective-type mystery series but on an intergalactic scale, where Earth itself is merely a “precinct” for the Green Lantern Corps to operate within.
According to IMDB.com, Ritter (Matlock, Frozen II, Poker Face) has been cast as Billy Macon, described as “a good-looking charmer who does his father’s bidding. Capitalizing on his family’s reputation, his character clings to his small-town ego and has everything to lose”. Veteran actor Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights, Super 8, King Kong) has been cast as Hal Jordan, and Aaron Pierre (Mufasa) has been cast as his new protege, John Stewart. Other notable cast members include actress Kelly MacDonald (Brave, Boardwalk Empire, Skeleton Crew).

Max had previously had a different live-action Green Lanterns series in development with producer Greg Berlanti since 2019, however, the company announced in January 2023 that they would instead focus on Lanterns from director James Gunn and Peter Safran. Actor Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) starred in the first, albeit unsuccessful, attempt at bringing Green Lantern to the screen as a live-action superhero in 2011. However, there have since been several animated adaptations of the iconic comic book character. The upcoming live-action series is currently filming, with an expected release date sometime in 2026.
