Jason Blum And James Wan Are In Talks To Merge Studios To Build A Massive Horror Film Factory

Across the horror movie genre, the two names that come to mind are Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions and James Wan of Atomic Monster. These powerhouses have put out some of the most notable films that horror has to offer. Blumhouse has titles to its credit such as The Purge, Paranormal Activity, and Halloween. While The Conjuring and Saw franchises call Atomic Monster home. These two production companies have brought in $11.6 billion since 2004. Wan told The New York Times – “We really do complement each other, yin and yang, which is part of what makes this so exciting,” regarding the companies combining forces.

Once these two entities come together, they will dominate the horror industry with titles including The Nun, Annabelle, La Llorona, Insidious, Quija, Unfriended, Exorcist, Happy Death Day, The Invisible Man, Get Out, The Black Phone, Malignant, and Mortal Kombat just to name a few. Between the duo, they also have high-grossing non-horror films such as Furious 7 and Aquaman. Currently, Blumhouse has a first-look deal in progress with Universal Studios. Assuming the deal closes with Atomic Monster, the first-look deal would extend to that brand as well, expanding the potential for many future cinematic opportunities. The better together approach is expected to allow for more output opportunities for both companies while allowing them to maintain their individual brands and identities.

Blumhouse and Wan’s production companies have already collaborated on the upcoming film, M3gan, a thriller centering on a doll who has artificial intelligence. Universal is expected to release M3gan on January 6, 2023.
