James Mangold Confirms 'Indiana Jones 5' Will Feature A Digitally De-Aged Harrison Ford
The intro sequence for Indiana Jones tends to be memorable. With 4 previous installments, there’s a lot for director James Mangold to live up to. Technology is on his side in this case; the way things have advanced gives him the ability to make a beautiful splash.
In an exclusive interview with Empire, Mangold gave some details regarding the movie’s route. Several techniques were applied to create the captivating footage, including the implementation of new ILM software to pull old footage of Ford to be paired with fresh media. This sequence will take the audience back in time, giving established context that shifts seamlessly to where the “current time” resides.

Mangold summarizes the thought behind this direction:
“...the audience doesn’t experience the change between the ‘40s and ‘60s as an intellectual conceit, but literally experiences the buccaneering spirit of those early days… and then the beginning of now.”
Producer Kathleen Kennedy told Empire that “instantly you have that feeling, ‘I’m in an Indiana Jones movie.’” Her “hope is that, although it will be talked about in terms of technology, you just watch it and go, ‘Oh my God, they just found footage. This was a thing they shot 40 years ago.’” This makes one wonder just how seamless the footage turned out.
The results even shocked and convinced the lead actor himself. Harrison Ford stated that “this is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it.” With Ford’s stamp of approval, the hype around the final product is mounting. The movie, whose title has yet to be confirmed, is set for a theatrical release on June 30th, 2023.
