James Gunn Says Green Lantern HBO Max Series Is Still A Go

DC

It should be clear by now that James Gunn is a kind and merciful man that will not put up with unfounded gossip. On Monday, Gunn had to quash gossip about the HBO Max Green Lantern series that had been in development before the service even launched.

The creative DC Studios co-CEO took to Twitter, debunking an outlet’s rumor that said the Green Lantern series was scrapped and not moving forward. Their response was a single word: “Fake”. And really, this shouldn’t be all that surprising. The show’s latest stage of development, pivoting focus to John Stewart, was originally reported in late October, mere days before he and Peter Safran assumed their positions. It certainly wouldn’t have been fair to shut them down before they could even figure out a path to take the character to. Gunn comes from the other side. He’s witnessed what many of Warner Bros.’s projects have been through under Discovery-based management and probably wants to still give that fighting chance.

After all, the Strange Adventures series that the Green Lantern series was announced with was one such casualty of the merger. The Green Lantern series itself has gone through a couple of iterations. It started as a series that would explore a wide spectrum of Lanterns, including Jessica Cruz and Simon Baz, but that was pared down and pruned to Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, who were cast, with Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine set to play them, but after a year and a half and the change at the top, that’s when the pivot happened. And being so early in such pivots, it would have little problem being flexible enough to fit in Gunn and Safran’s plans for the new DC Universe without dismissing to somewhere in the broader multiverse. Berlanti Productions is still attached as the production company.
