James Gunn Responds To 'Justice League' Movie Rumors
James Gunn was reportedly slated to direct a new Justice League movie, inspired by the 2008 animated film Justice League: The New Frontier. This would have been a reboot of the last Justice League movie, continuing the events following the upcoming Superman film. Superman is currently in the post-production stages and is on track for its July 11, 2025, theatrical release, though no trailer has been promoted yet.
The director has since debunked the rumors that there will be any Justice League reboot, but he did follow that up with appreciation for 2004’s The New Frontier comics. Gunn explained that the “magical alternate history” is a key inspiration for his fresh take on the DC Universe. The comics follow an alternate timeline known as Earth-21 that interweaves Golden Age heroes Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman with Silver Age heroes The Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Green Lantern Hal Jordan (who we already know will have a large role in the upcoming DCU TV show Lanterns).
Audiences are not sure quite yet how big of an influence The New Frontier comics will have on upcoming DC projects, but it’s an interesting perspective to consider. We’ll know more about Gunn’s vision for the DCU when the animated Max original Creature Commandos launches on December 5.
