James Gunn Confirms That He And Matthew Lillard Discussed Being Cast In A Plastic Man Movie
In a recent tweet, James Gunn confirmed earlier rumors that he and Matthew Lillard spoke about casting the actor in a Plastic Man movie back in 2000 on the set of Scooby-Doo. Fans might recall that Lillard portrayed Shaggy in the Scooby-Doo movies and direct-to-video films.
Amanda Idoko (Breaking News in Yuba County, The Mayor) supposedly penned a script for a Plastic Man movie back in 2018 with Robert Shaye (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) as executive producer. Back in 1995, the Wachowskis (The Matrix franchise) apparently also wrote a script for Plastic Man with Keanu Reeves as the lead. However, both productions failed to get off the starting blocks. There is no information as to whether Gunn was attached to direct either of these two ill-fated attempts to bring Plastic Man to the masses or if this will be a third attempt at bringing the character to the silver screen. However, Gunn’s tweet suggests he has not forgotten about the antihero.

DC’s Plastic Man was created by Jack Cole back in 1941. He has been brought to the screen in animation form several times, (best known as a recurring character on Batman: The Brave and The Bold) but we have yet to see him in live action. Plastic man is a reformed criminal, turning from a life of crime after exposure to chemicals turns his body into rubber, and gives him the ability to stretch and morph into any shape.
Matthew Lillard would have been an interesting addition to the DC universe with his previous history of zany roles and his seemingly elastic face. Lillard has also been mentioned in fan castings of the part. This could be a popular matchup if DC ever manages to get the movie off the ground.
