James Gunn announced on Instagram that Superman is now officially in the can. The production wrapped after five months of principal photography. Gunn led with a dedication to the cast and crew

God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life

Apart from a few (to be expected when filming outdoors) set photo leaks, Superman’s production has been reasonably drama-free. This must be a relief in comparison to the mishap-plagued Thunderbolts. And of course, the last few DC releases were plagued by controversy (Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom and the Flash). But it adds to confidence that James Gunn’s reset of the DC Universe will help solve the problems that have been hounding the studio. Superman isn’t due in theatres for another year, so it’s going to be a long wait to see if the calmer production has any effect on the quality of the movie or the box office.

According to CEO of DC Studios, Peter Safran, the film ‘focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.’  However, James Gunn has said that he is looking to the 2005-2008 All Star Superman comic run for inspiration. This series utilises a cover very similar to the first image produced for the movie. In this run, Superman comes face to face with his mortality, which could be an interesting concept to play with on screen. We’ll have to wait for the movie to know for sure.
