James Gunn And Peter Safran Say They’ll Let ‘Superman & Lois’ Live On, At Least For A Bit
Superman & Lois’s future has been very murky. Warner Bros not only went through another change of ownership in becoming Warner Bros. Discovery but gave up controlling interest in The CW to Nexstar, who is only interested in minimal carryover until they don’t have to anymore. On top of all that, DC Studios put forward a plan for a new core DC Universe with more unified TV and film projects. While this had spelled more immediate doom for most DC shows before they were hired, the architects of said plan, co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, on Tuesday addressed what the future would be for this series.
Speaking to reporters, the two stated they see the series having “one or two more seasons” left. Gunn even gave something of an endorsement, acknowledging it is “a show everybody likes, so it’s going to keep going for a little bit.” It’s not entirely clear how much season 3, which premieres March 14, counts in this discussion. Does it mean season 3, seasons 3 and 4, just season 4, or seasons 4 and 5? Whatever the case, it’s at least a more comforting situation than the just-canceled Pennyworth, or Stargirl, Titans, or Doom Patrol, who, while not all CW series, still had to write to wrap up in their current seasons as the way is made for the live-action TV side of the new core DC Universe.
Polls have indicated that most CW viewers consider Superman & Lois a must-keep show under the new owners, who may only renew one or two more shows of the current slate. Reports have also proposed the possibility that if The CW no longer has the room or budget to keep the show after its current season, the show could move to HBO Max to finish whatever remains.
