In An Effort To Prevent Review Bombing, IMDb Changes Its Rating System

The racist vitriol against Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid has hit IMDb and several other review sites. At the top of the film’s rating page, IMDb placed a small banner that reads: “Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculator has been applied.”

The US version of IMDb isn’t the only one showing the notice. The Mexican, UK, Canadian, and Brazilian versions of the site also have the notice. In addition, other movie rating sites have seen campaigns against the film. Moviepilot, a German site, had the movie showing a rating of .7 out of 10 before the weekend, which now sits at 5 out of 10. French review site AlloCiné included a posting that said, “Currently, we observe an unusual distribution of ratings on this film, which should encourage caution. We encourage you to form your own opinion on the film.”

Many believe that the negative review-bombing is being driven by bots. However, negative reviews didn’t stop the movie from grossing over 115 million dollars at the box office over the 4-day holiday weekend, making it one of the highest openings for Memorial Day weekend.

Starring Halle Bailey, Melissa McCarthy, Javier Bardem, and Jonah Hauer-King, The Little Mermaid marks Disney’s 16th live-action remake.
