IATSE Membership Ready To Ratify Tentative Agreement

The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) on Tuesday, June 25. The union will meet on July 13th to vote on the new agreement. The tentative deal includes a rise in pay of 7%, 4%, and then 3.5% over three years. The deal also discourages overworking employees with union members being paid double time for any workday that exceeds 12 hours and being paid triple time for any workday that exceeds 15 hours. After safety issues earlier in the year, the deal would extend California’s pilot safety program to studios in Georgia and New York, and each major studio would have a safety officer on set.

The union also managed to strike a compromise with artificial intelligence (AI). Although the language of the agreement treats AI as inevitable, it ensures protections for its employees. The agreement states that no employee can be required to provide AI prompts that would “result in the displacement of any covered employee.” The agreement further protects employees by requiring their consent before being scanned for AI programs and clarifies that signing these consent forms cannot be a condition of employment. The tentative agreement also seeks increases in streaming residuals and protection of their health plans and pensions. The IATSE has promised to release a full summary of the deal in a few days.
