54-year-old actor Hugh Jackman opened up recently about a very controversial topic in Hollywood. The Australian actor denied it when asked if he was using “juice”, a slang for steroids. Jackman, in an interview with Variety, commented about this matter telling that he “did the old school way”, avoiding the use of drugs to obtain the body superheroes are known for. Chicken, being a lean mass source of protein, was the go-to for Jackman. He also said that the “karma wasn’t good for him” because of the number of chickens he has eaten for his role as Wolverine throughout the decades.

Jackman chose an alternative route than others in his position would. Although it is banned in professional sports in general, for acting it is not. Lots of actors look for trainers and dieticians that suggest the use of PEDs (performance-enhancing drugs, a more generic term) and HGH (human growth hormone). Both are common in the industry and help muscle growth faster than it would take doing the “old school way”,  just eating healthy, protein-rich foods.

Jackman may be one of the few exceptions in the movie industry. An article from The Hollywood Reporter, in an interview with famous personal trainer Happy Hill, confirmed an interesting number. According to the trainer, around 20% of actors use PEDs and HGH for muscle growth. The article also confirms that this is a problem because Hollywood keeps recycling old actors for roles that take a heavy toll on the body. A shortcut for helping them is drugs that will give - with hard training - a so-called “jacked” body.

The reality is that bodies like those shown in movies and series are obtainable, but it costs a lot of money to achieve. Per The Hollywood Reporter

With its fountain-of-youth promise, HGH quietly has become the substance of choice for Tinseltown denizens looking to quickly burn fat, boost energy and even improve complexion. The drug costs up to $3,000 a month. Taken along with steroids ($50 to $150 per month), to help build muscle, the results can be startling.

Jackman chose a healthy lifestyle and followed it even when the stakes got higher. As the movie industry aims gradually further and further for actors to have impossible bodies like those of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Henry Cavill for example, drugs could become the norm.
