Throwaway Insult In ‘Boba Fett’ Episode 2 Has A Deeper Meaning Than You Know
We are now three episodes (or chapters if you will) into Lucasfilm's latest show The Book of Boba Fett. Thus far, it is showing us a new side to the famous bounty hunter-turned-crime lord, giving the Fett man more characterization than he ever had in the original trilogy.
While “Chapter 1: Stranger in a Strange Land” started off the series well, I (along with others from reaction of the fanbase) would say “Chapter 2: The Tribes of Tatooine” really kicked off the series. That extra 20 minutes did help. Now if you have been reading the Star Wars comics and are familiar with them, you may have had a reaction somewhat like this last week:
RELATED: Who's That Wookiee In 'The Book of Boba Fett'?
Aye, that big, scary mountain of a Wookiee, Black Krrsantan. Wouldn't want to bump into him in a dark alley. He makes Chewbacca look like a cuddly Ewok. I know Wookiees have that reputation of pulling people's arms out of their sockets (I have experienced multiple dislocations and they hurt!). I can see Black Krrsantan here being able to pull a person apart.
If you are familiar with the comics, you will know that Boba Fett and Black Krrsantan are acquainted with each other, doing jobs for both Jabba and Lord Vader himself. You could say this is a blast from the past for Boba seeing the "evil Wookiee" again after all these years in Mos Espa. When approached by Black Krrsantan after being introduced by the Hutt Twins, Fett makes a remark towards the Wookiee:
"You can bring as many gladiators as you wish. But these are not the death pits of Duur and I am not a sleeping Trandoshan Guard."
Not only is it a reference to Black Krrsantan's days as a gladiator, it is also an insult to the Wookiee. Trandoshans are the natural enemies to the Wookiees. The lizard-like Trandoshan will come to Kashyyk to hunt them for sport and collect their pelts. It is like poaching to the extreme, going from animals to sentient lifeforms. This is something that we do witness during the finale of Season 3 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and similar to the movie Predators (also directed by Book of Boba Fett producer Robert Rodriguez) Trandoshans would kidnap Wookiees and take them to a game preserve to hunt. Hey, maybe we will get a little reference to that film at some point again.
We do know from the show’s many trailers that Trandoshans will make appearances in The Book of Boba Fett. Perhaps Black Krrsantan will dish out some "Wookiee justice" by returning the favor back to them. It is also worth mentioning that in Chapter 1, there was a Trandoshan offering Boba a Wookiee pelt as tribute to the new crime lord.
Robert Rodriguez is known for his gritty and mature films with slight suspension of disbelief as seen with From Dusk Till Dawn, Desperado, and Once Upon a Time in Mexico (still need to see that one). Hopefully, some of that will make its way into The Book of Boba Fett. I would not mind seeing Black Krranstan pulling the limbs off a Trandoshan, which nearly happened in The Force Awakens with Chewbacca and UnKar Plutt, with the latter getting one of his limbs pulled out. We did see the aftermath of an arm pulling in Solo: A Star Wars Story so there is a chance. Rodriguez also knows how to cater to kids too (you know, Star Wars' primary audience) with films such as The Spy Kids films and The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl so he knows how to balance it out.
Bring on the rest of the series every Wednesday. Star Wars is off to a hell of a start this year.
