Helldivers, mobilize! In a surprise announcement at the 2024 Game Awards, developer Arrowhead revealed the next free update to Helldivers 2 was available immediately for all players!

Titled “Omens of Tyranny,” this update to the game opens a new front against another returning foe, the Illuminate, who appeared in the original Helldivers. A race of advanced aliens who were initially peaceful with humans, Super Earth dramatically turned against them when Earth’s leadership claimed the Illuminate had weapons of mass destruction. The resulting conflict saw the species nearly wiped out, but they are now back in a far more terrifying form.

A new front has opened in the galactic south against the Illuminate’s “vanguard” forces and features horrifically zombified human colonists fighting for a small selection of living Illuminate that command them. Their current objectives are unknown, but they must be stopped before they massacre and convert more humans for their insidious forces.

The update also introduces urban environments to the game as the site of these Illuminate attacks, alongside a host of new weapons and gear suitable for close-quarters combat. This is in addition to newly-released vehicles able to be acquired and driven through the streets and terrain by Helldivers. All of this comes alongside or as part of a brand new warbond for all players (essentially a battle pass).

This update comes after months of hints and clues about the incoming Illuminate, from vague developer comments to strange sightings and signals in-game as players fought on other war fronts. It also comes after a lull in content for Helldiver 2’s overall. However, the coming weeks will almost certainly see a reinvigoration of the player base and more content trickling out as the core Illuminate military joins this vanguard force and Super Earth rises to the challenge posed by this new foe.
