HBO Max is leading the way in adaptations of video games to the cinema with its small-screen adaptation of The Last of Us. On Wednesday, November 2, the streaming giant announced its release date for the series to be January 15, 2023. Fans of the franchise responded with enthusiasm and excitement as many undoubtedly enjoyed the adventure from the original release, the downloadable continuation of the story, its sequel, a remastered edition, a remake, and a comic book miniseries.

The Last of Us is a 2013 video game franchise that blends both the post-apocalyptic and action-adventure genres, telling the story of a post-pandemic society. Twenty years after the initial decimation, a hope for a cure emerges that sparks a thrilling adventure.

The upcoming adaptation will star Pedro Pascal in the lead role as Joel, a survivor of the pandemic. He must smuggle a young girl named Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) out of the quarantine zone as part of an effort to make a cure. Season 1 of The Last of Us will see the story unfold across nine episodes written by Craig Main and Neil Druckmann. The direct involvement of Druckmann, the original writer and director of the games, signals that this could lead to further video game adaptations in the future.
