A statement shared by showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that the second season of House of the Dragon has started filming.

House of the Dragon has returned,” the statement reads. “We are thrilled to be shooting again with members of our original family as well as new talents on both sides of the camera. All your favourite characters will soon be conspiring at the council tables, marching with their armies and riding their dragons into battle. We can’t wait to share what we have in store.”

Star of the series Matt Smith had previously said that filming would begin in April last month, so confirmation that it has is good news for fans of the series. This second season is likely to air in 2024, giving a year for all production to wrap and the hype cycle to begin. Not that it needs it…the series was outpacing the viewing figures for almost every episode of Game of Thrones.

This second season of House of the Dragon will continue exploring the fall of House Targaryen. A prequel to this series is currently being talked about at HBO, which will show the founding of the Targaryen Dynasty and Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros.
