With the popularity surrounding the Game of Thrones franchise still strong from the flame that is prequel series House of the Dragon, it seems HBO is interested in keeping that flame lit with another prequel series.

Variety has learnt that a prequel centered around Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is being planned. Featuring Aegon and his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, the prequel would show Aegon’s ascent to being the first king of Westeros and the founding of the Targaryen Dynasty, events that take place roughly 300 years prior to those of Game of Thrones.

The plans for this prequel could potentially see a feature film introduce the main climax before moving things to the series. Whether that happens depends on whether Warner Bros. Discovery feels the move would pay off. While it’s unlikely that a film within the Game of Thrones franchise could pull Avatar box office numbers, it would likely still be successful enough to land within the top 30 highest-grossing films worldwide.

News of a second season of House of the Dragon has been confirmed via star Matt Smith, who said that filming is set to begin this month. Set two centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, it will show the fall of House Targaryen.
