After Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves found success at the box office, the creators John Frances Daley and Jonathan Goldstein entertained the idea of a sequel. The pair said that if they made a sequel, it would focus on the same party with extended abilities, including the use of magic for Chris Pine’s character Edgin. However, a sequel was never in their minds when they wrote the first film.

Daley claims, “I think that [a sequel] would cloud our ability to focus entirely on the film at hand. The cardinal mistake many studios make is to put the cart before the horse, where they start crafting a cinematic universe before they even make a good single film.” That mindset seemed to pay off as Honor Among Thieves earned $38.5 million at the box office.

Goldstein weighed in with his thoughts on the advantages of a sequel, “You don’t have to spend much screen time introducing [the party]. The audience knows them, and you can jump into the plot more quickly. And obviously, we have great affection for both the actors and these roles that they play. But we’d want to introduce some new figures along the way, and certainly a lot of new monsters.”

One of these new monsters could be Drizzt. The writers confirmed that they thought about including him in the first film but decided not to use him, but they are open to including him in a future film. When deciding on creatures for the first film, the pair asked Wizards of the Coast for a poll of the 30 most popular creatures, which led to the owlbear being included in the first movie.

Daley and Goldstein teased some out-there ideas for a sequel as well including a stop-motion film, and Drizzt meeting the 80s characters after they’ve been maimed in the maze. Whatever the pair decide, it’s clear they have a passion for the movie and the tabletop game that inspired it.
