Guillermo Del Toro Confirms That He Once Worked On A Never Released 'Star Wars' Project
Guillermo Del Toro spoke with Collider and confirmed he did work on an unreleased Star Wars project focused on Jabba the Hutt. The effort would focus on the planet of Tatooine, which was a primary landscape for Star Wars canon. “We had The Rise and Fall of Jabba the Hutt, so I was super happy. We were doing a lot of stuff; then it’s not my property, it’s not my money, and then it's one of those 30 screenplays that goes away,” Del Toro said at the event.
Del Toro was writing the script with David S. Goyer, who first teased the project during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast. Goyer said, “I wrote an un-produced ‘Star Wars’ movie that Guillermo del Toro was going to direct. That was about four years ago.’ In response to Goyer’s comments on the podcast, Del Toro tweeted, “True. Can’t say much. Maybe two letters ‘J’ and ‘BB’, is that three letters?”

Unfortunately, Lucasfilm did not move forward with the film and has not commented publicly on why the decision was made. However, Del Toro sounds in good spirits as the project looks to remain unreleased. “You can never be ungrateful with life. Whatever life sends you, there’s something to be learned from it. So, you know, I trust the universe, I do. When something doesn’t happen, I go, ‘Why?’ I try to have a dialogue with myself. ‘Why didn’t it happen?’ And the more you swim upstream with the universe, the less you’re gonna realize where you’re going.”
