'Good Omens' Universe Expands Into Graphic Novel
Good Omens is the story of two people who should never have been friends, an angel, Aziraphale, and the demon Crowley, who have to work together to stop the Apocalypse from happening. The novel by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman was adapted into a series for Amazon Prime in 2019, that became extremely popular. The second season was just released on the streaming service. However, the world of Good Omens is not done, as the story has evolved into a new medium-a graphic novel. The graphic novel is the work of Eisner-award-winning artist Colleen Doran. The novel remains faithful to the original novel, it has a new added visual appearance to it, that adds depths to the universe of Good Omens. The art director, Alex Stott, of Dunmanifestin, which is the publishing company of the Pratchett estate, recently discussed the new graphic novel and the relationship to the TV series and novel, and some other Pratchett books that could eventually see the same treatment that Good Omens did.
Stott says how Good Omens resonates with so many because it contains a lot of very human themes. A lot of the work that has been made by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman looks at humanity from a different angle. The book is also hilarious, and it feels like two amazing writers who were trying to make each other laugh.

Good Omens made the perfect graphic novel because no screen adaptation would have the budget to include every single joke. It’s a comfort book for many people, and the graphic novel lets people experience the story in a new way. The graphic novel is different from the TV show in the fact that they don’t have the same constraints the TV show budget has. The show has a finite VFX budget, whereas the graphic novel can dive deeper into details from the novel that the show may not be able to. The graphic novel is also extremely faithful to the book, and everything has been done to make sure it's as close to the book as possible.
Colleen Doran has a great history working with Neil Gaiman, and he originally suggested her for the project. She is a huge Good Omens fan and came to the project with a wealth of knowledge and genuine love for the book. The pages radiate fun, and you can feel the joy she had in creating them. Stott says his favorite moment in the graphic novel is the first double-page spread is a “wow” moment. It’s the introduction to each of the horsemen, and Colleen mixes elements of elegance and macabre together. Every page has something new, and no page feels the same.
The Kickstarter is currently live for the Good Omens adaptation. If you back the Kickstarter, not only do you get the graphic novel, but you also some sweet Kickstarter rewards as well. Some of these include art prints from Colleen and other wonderful artists, limited edition enamel pins, trading cards, socks, notebooks a giant map, and more.
