Gina Carano's Response After Being Fired By Lucasfilm

Over the last few months, Gina Carano, who has been playing Cara Dune in the live-action Star Wars series The Mandalorian, has been stirring a lot of controversy on social media. By now, many are familiar with her anti-masking beliefs and how she has treated the inclusion of pronouns in bios in a joking manner. Earlier this week, she drew attention (again) when she seemed to be comparing modern life as a Republican to the suffering of the Jews in Nazi Germany. This was the final straw that made Lucasfilm decide to cut ties, and it became publicly known that they would not be working with her on Star Wars in the future, a topic on which we previously reported.

Since then, Deadline has been provided with an update on where Gina Carano is going from here. The conservative news website The Daily Wire is giving Carano her own film project, which will be exclusive to the website's subscribers. In Carano's own words:

“The Daily Wire is helping make one of my dreams — to develop and produce my own film — come true. I cried out and my prayer was answered. I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob. I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”

The Daily Wire co-founder Ben Shapiro had the following to add:

“We could not be more excited to be working with Gina Carano, an incredible talent dumped by Disney and Lucasfilm for offending the authoritarian Hollywood Left. This is what Daily Wire exists to do: provide an alternative not just for consumers, but for creators who refuse to bow to the mob. We’re eager to bring Gina’s talent to Americans who love her, and we’re just as eager to show Hollywood that if they want to keep cancelling those who think differently, they’ll just be helping us build the X-wing to take down their Death Star.”

Some fans of The Mandalorian are glad that Gina Carano has finally been let go, though their opinions are divided on whether her character Cara Dune should be recast, get killed offscreen, or just never get mentioned again on the series. Given that Carano played a side character, some argue that her absence would not make much of a difference. Other viewers are showing support for Carano, countering "cancel culture" by...cancelling their Disney+ subscriptions.

There are reports that there were further plans for the character of Cara Dune. However, given recent events, it seems that those plans may be in the dust, at the moment. In The Mandalorian season 2, Cara Dune was put in a position where the character does not even have to be involved in the main narrative that follows Din Djarin. Cara Dune becomes a New Republic marshal. It is pretty convenient that this comes at a time where such an event would end up working as a write-out for the character. At the end of the season, Dune was a bit reluctant to help Din until she found out Grogu had been taken. Now Grogu is out of the picture, and the storyline may follow Din Djarin and Bo-Katan dealing with the Darksaber and whatever goes on with Mandalore. So Cara Dune does not necessarily need to be involved. Plus, the spin-off Rangers of the New Republic, with its title, can involve just about anyone. Whatever happens with Cara Dune, it is clear that Gina Carano is out of the picture.
