Surprising MCU Character To Appear In ‘The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special’
The last time we saw the ragtag Guardians of the Galaxy on the big screen was in 2019’s epic Avengers: Endgame. Yes, let that sink in for a moment. Three years. I don’t know about you, but the pandemic has made it feel even longer. Don’t worry, though, because you’ll get your fix of space-based shenanigans when the Benatar and its crew appear, at least for some of the time, in Thor: Love and Thunder. You will have to wait a little longer, though, for their next adventure as the main stars.
While it was nice to see Star-Lord and Thor battling egos in the trailer for the Asgardian’s latest story, how about something to whet your appetite before James Gunn's The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special in December and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 on May 5, 2023? Perhaps a surprising appearance of another team affiliate from the comics? Russian Telepathic dog, anyone?

Wrapped Gift For Gunn
Although production has yet to wrap on both The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, James Gunn, the director, shared one of the wrapped gifts he received on Twitter. In keeping with the Christmas theme, the gift featured eight different baubles, each highlighting different characters including Star-Lord, Rocket, Nebula, Drax, Groot (who has grown significantly since their last appearance), Kraglin, and Mantis. Along with the characters you would expect is the Russian telepathic dog named Cosmo, who appeared at the Collector’s Museum on Knowhere in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Cosmo is sporting Rudolf’s antlers and a red nose along with an upgraded spacesuit. A caption accompanying the image thanked Gunn for all his hard work from the heads of Marvel Studios, Kevin, Lou, Victoria, Sara, David, and Courtney.
Who Is Cosmo And What Does His Appearance Mean?
Since the Easter egg for Cosmo the golden labrador-retriever mix was included in Guardians of the Galaxy back in 2014, fans have been itching for a full appearance from the space-dwelling canine. After he failed to turn up in Vol. 2. (apart from a cameo in the end-credits scene), Infinity War, or even Endgame, it feels like the timing is right. What he might be doing is up for debate. In the comics, he is Knowhere’s security chief and a member of the Guardians.
Could he have the same position on Knowhere in the MCU? How will he be part of the action involving Will Poulter’s Adam Warlock and the rest of the gang? We will have to wait until December to find out.
What Else Do We Know About The Guardians Of The Galaxy Sequel?
Along with the aforementioned Cosmo, all of the main cast is back, including Gamora (in a younger form, thanks to the events of Endgame), for one last adventure with the current crew. The film will also mark the long-awaited and teased arrival of Adam Warlock (played by Dopesick star Will Poulter) into the MCU, to exact revenge on behalf of The Sovereign after Rocket stole Anulax Batteries.
How this all plays out is another element of Vol. 3 that remains to be seen, as Adam Warlock is very rarely a straightforward villain and more of an anti-hero that leans towards the good side more than the bad.
Another interesting addition that has recently been announced, of course, is Chukwudi Iwuji’s casting in an as-yet-disclosed role. The Nigerian-British actor Iwuji recently appeared in Gunn’s Suicide Squad spin-off Peacemaker as Clemson Murn. Although it is speculation, the High Evolutionary is one character that many fans are hoping Iwuji will be playing.
This is a good call as Adam Warlock and the High Evolutionary have a lot of history in the comics. Either way, his inclusion along with Cosmo and Adam Warlock means we are in for some exciting developments from the cosmic end of the MCU.
The Guardians Of The Galaxy Holiday Special is due to be released on Disney+ in December 2022.
