After making his first in-person appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) this past week since the COVID-19 pandemic began in 2020, George R. R. Martin has unfortunately fallen ill with the virus, causing him to miss the red carpet premiere of House of the Dragon in Los Angeles.  Martin is fully vaccinated and double-boosted. He had been planning on having limited book signings and picture opportunities, albeit from a distance:

I will be masked almost all the time. I will not be shaking hands, sorry. Or even bumping fists. You can take my picture when I am signing your book, but stay on your side of the table, please. No selfies. No hugs. In past years, I was always glad to do all that, to make myself available to my readers, but these are not normal times. Once COVID goes away for good — if it ever does — perhaps I will be able to do all that again. But not now. I cannot get sick. I have too much work to do.

As COVID cases began to rise, Martin decided to forego meeting with any fans, sticking just to the panel discussion.  But, as Martin said, being in a room with 150,000 people, “could be a challenge.”  Indeed, even with all the precautions, Martin still caught Covid.  Thankfully, it is a very mild case, and he was able to post a YouTube video on his blog from his hotel in Los Angeles where he is in quarantine.

In the video, Martin explained the precautions he took to avoid getting Covid-19.  Most surprisingly, no one else in his entourage came down with Covid, though House of the Dragon showrunner Miguel Sapochnik had to miss SDCC because he had just been diagnosed with the virus.  Martin had also been planning on attending the LA International Shorts Festival in North Hollywood to support a film he had helped produce, Night of the Cooters. Now, his plans are to take his medicine, rest up in the four-star hotel he is quarantined in, and then go home to Santa Fe to continue working on his book, The Winds of Winter.
