George R. R. Martin fans have another show to keep on their radar. Set a century before Game of Thrones, Max is making a new show adapting The Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas. Dunk is a lowly knight joined by his squire Egg who both strive to win their daily bread in a world still reeling from the Blackfyre Rebellion.

Although the series will focus on the Dunk & Egg pair, their names will be left out of the title. Martin cited the need to attract new viewers to the show and claimed that Dunk & Egg sounds like a sitcom title. He explained further, “We want ‘knight’ in the title. Knighthood and chivalry are central to the themes of these stories.” Martin shared a tentative title of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight.

The author and show creator said that the series will likely be six episodes, but that isn’t a final decision yet. Martin stressed that development takes time and decried past internet rumors, “Way back in the summer of 2016, when HBO first started thinking about Game of Thrones spinoffs, I pitched them two ideas: the Dance of the Dragons, which in due time became House of the Dragon and Dunk & Egg.  That was seven years ago. The lesson there is that development takes time. I see all these stories on the net about other spinoffs being killed or abandoned… no idea where they get this stuff… and it just makes me shake my head."

Martin confirmed that the pilot episode has already been written by Ira Parker, who worked on the House of the Dragon series. If this new series is successful, Martin and his team would like to adapt The Sworn Sword and The Mystery Knight. Martin will be an executive producer for the series along with Parker, Ryan Condal, and Vince Gerardis. As the series is still being written, there’s no release date yet.
