'Genshin Impact' Takes The Players Voice Award At The Game Awards, Upsetting Fans Of The 'Sonic' Franchise
Genshin Impact took home the Player’s Voice Award at The Game Awards last night, and while fans of the title may be happy, fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are not, as they were pulling for Sonic Frontiers to win. Both games were neck and neck during the last two rounds, making it a fierce competition. Sonic fans took to Twitter to express their outrage.
Many were also confused as to why a game released in 2020 was even on the ballot for this year’s games awards. However, this can be explained by the following policy:
“Games released in previous years are eligible in all award categories, so long as the jury feels their inclusion is merited due to new content, improvements or service updates.”

Still, fans felt that Sonic Frontiers was robbed of not just this award but the nomination for “Best Score,” which many fans and non-fans alike felt Sonic Frontiers deserved at least a nomination for. There were accusations of gaining votes by using bot programs on both sides, and the lead-up to and the fallout from this announcement has not been pretty. Despite this upset, the scriptwriter for the Japanese version, Morio Kishimoto, is happy that Sonic Frontiers even got in the top five.
There seems to be a similar sentiment shared among fans as well.
Regardless, it seems that Sonic fans and Genshin fans at least have something to celebrate. Congrats to the fans of both titles!
