New Posters Show Off The Lightsabers In 'Obi-Wan Kenobi' Series

Obi-Wan Kenobi

The Obi-Wan Kenobi series is just around the corner and we cannot wait to see Ewan McGregor reprise his role as our favorite Jedi from the prequels. Fans of the franchise have been finding it difficult to curb their enthusiasm since the trailer for the miniseries dropped on Star Wars day, May the fourth. On May 11th, the official Twitter account of the series released images of five lightsabers that belong to important characters in the series, which can all be unlocked by followers by liking the tweet. The lightsabers that were revealed belong to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, Reva (also known as the Third Sister), Fifth Brother, and the Grand Inquisitor.

It is intriguing that the official Obi-Wan Kenobi Twitter account has emphasized the lightsabers as a part of their promotion strategy as we do not see Obi-Wan using his lightsaber in the trailer. He is shown using his blaster instead, perhaps to conceal the fact that he is a Jedi. The lightsaber posters could also be teasing the big Obi-Wan Kenobi vs. Darth Vader lightsaber duel that fans have been eagerly looking forward to. Hayden Christensen will be back as Darth Vader in the series, and everyone is anticipating a huge face-off between the former Padawan and master toward the end of the series. Obi-Wan has three lightsabers during his lifetime and the hilt of the lightsaber in the poster is similar to that of the third and final lightsaber with the blue blade that Obi-Wan constructed after he was promoted to the rank of Jedi Master. Obi-Wan wielded this lightsaber during the Clone Wars while fighting alongside Anakin, and it was the same one that he used in their fateful duel on Mustafar. Harbro's Black Series Force FX Elite Lightsaber line will include an exquisite replica of this iconic lightsaber.

The lightsabers belonging to the villain side include Vader's crimson synth-crystal-powered lightsaber. The Sith Lord was seen using this lightsaber in his duel against Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars: A New Hope. The posters also reveal the Imperial Inquisitors’ unique spinning double-bladed lightsabers. Obi-Wan Kenobi will see the live-action debut of the Grand Inquisitor (played by Rupert Friend) and the Fifth Brother (played by Sung Kang), who have played a significant part in Star Wars: Rebels. The series will also introduce the Third Sister, also known as Reva (played by Moses Ingram). Her lightsaber has a semicircular hilt, which is different from the completely circular hilt of the other Inquisitors’ lightsabers. As she has gotten a lot of screen time in the trailer, it would be interesting to see what her character has in store.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is set about ten years after the events of Revenge of the Sith and will depict the journey of the distraught Jedi Master Obi-Wan as he deals with the loss of his former friend and Padawan Anakin Skywalker while keeping Anakin's son safe from the Empire. Following Master Yoda's instructions, he has taken little Luke to Anakin's family on Tatooine. Here he watches over the boy while he hides from the Galactic Empire’s Jedi purge. However, from the trailers, it does not seem that Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine as Ben Kenobi is going to be spent simply babysitting Luke and hiding from the Empire. It looks like Darth Vader is on a hunt for his former master and has sent the Inquisitors to fish him out. The trailer also shows Obi-Wan escaping the Inquisitors on a new planet called Ddaiyu. It appears that we will see the legendary Jedi answer the call of duty at the cost of his own safety.

With the very survival of the galaxy's beacon of hope at stake, we cannot wait to see what the most dependable Jedi in the galaxy, Obi-Wan Kenobi, will do to fight back. The Obi-Wan Kenobi series will have six episodes with the double-episode premiere airing on Disney+ on May 27, 2022.
