Fans Of 'Avatar The Last Airbender' Should Be Excited For These Graphic Novels Coming In 2023
The expanded universe of books about Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra is going to be getting even bigger.
Revealed at the ATLA panel today at Comic-Con was news of a new trilogy of Korra graphic novels, as well as a standalone graphic novel adventure for Fire Lord Zuko’s maniacal sister, Azula. The titles of the Korra trilogy were not specified by the source, but the apparent title of the Azula graphic novel is Azula in the Spirit Temple.

It’s an exciting time for ATLA and Korra fans. While many wait in anticipation for more news of the upcoming live-action Netflix adaptation of ATLA, fans learned back in February of 2021 that original creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, after departing the live-action Netflix project, had created their own studio focused on expanding the ATLA universe, and had partnered with Nickelodeon to do so. Their new studio will add to the already substantial expanded universe available in print through comics and graphic novels.
Avatar Korra already has two graphic novel collections, Turf Wars and Ruins of the Empire, and soon to be released, an anthology of short stories titled Patterns in Time, due out November 9th after a series of delays. Turf Wars continues Korra’s story right after the show ended and explores Korra and Asami’s relationship while also dealing with Korra’s decision to leave a portal to the spirit world open in the middle of Republic City. One of the major crime syndicates, the Triple Threats, take advantage of the disorder, leaving Korra and friends to take on this new threat. Ruins of the Empire follows Turf Wars and centers on Korra dealing with the aftermath of Kuvira’s fascist takeover of the Earth Kingdom and her surrender to Korra at the end of the show. It also further explores the relationship between Asami and Korra. Patterns in Time will also be published by Dark Horse and seems to be a slight departure from the graphic novel format, but features stories by the show's creators and numerous other talented writers.
While not one of the heroes, Azula has always been a focus of fan attention. The primary antagonist of season two of ATLA, after she was defeated by her brother, Zuko, and Katara, she pops up in a few of the comics and graphic novels that depict events after the show’s end. While she did have a short novella devoted to her perspective during the second season, as far as events after the show, she has only made cameos and been depicted in supporting character roles. Fans will gladly welcome a new story exploring more of Zuko's power-hungry sister.
