Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was, to a lot of Star Wars fans, a surprise hit when it released in 2019. Star Wars games post-Disney purchase up until that point had mostly consisted of the Battlefront reboots done by EA, which were full of controversy at best. When Titanfall developer Respawn announced they were making a single-player, story-driven Star Wars game, fans were understandably skeptical. After the game's release, it quickly became one of the best Star Wars games that came out in several years, and it restored fan’s faith in Star Wars games going forward. Now Jedi: Fallen Order will be hitting the next generation of consoles.

As of last Friday, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, and owners of the game on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One will receive an upgrade to the new consoles for free! While the upgraded version of the game for new consoles doesn’t contain any major differences, it will utilize the higher power of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X to improve graphics and lighting, improve frame rates, and decrease load times. For anyone who hasn’t played Jedi: Fallen Order, the game is currently available on both the PlayStation Store and Xbox Marketplace for $39.99, and it is definitely worth checking out. The game requires about 50 GB of storage on current consoles, and it should be similar on next-gen systems.

As stated above, the game was a smashing success. It took inspiration from games like Dark Souls and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. This led to some interesting combinations with combat and exploration, and critics praised the game’s unique blend of combat and exploration. The use of Force powers, lightsaber combat, and customization options gave players the experience of creating their own Jedi that hadn’t been seen since Knights of the Old Republic. The studio also wanted to promote exploration by incorporating certain “Metroidvania” aspects with a relatively basic map design. The game was also a financial success selling roughly 10 million copies in the first four months of its release, and it has since gone on to gain more than 20 million players worldwide.

In the game, players take control of Cal Kestis, who was portrayed phenomenally by Cameron Monaghan. Cal was a Jedi survivor of Order 66, and he was forced into hiding. After an incident at the scrapyard where Cal works, he is forced to use his Force abilities to save a co-worker. When he is outed as a former Jedi, he is relentlessly pursued through the galaxy by the two Sith Inquisitors. Along the way, he meets and befriends a former Jedi Knight named Cere Junda and a pilot named Greez Dritus. Together, they work to uncover the location of a Jedi Holocron which contains the locations of several Force-sensitive younglings throughout the galaxy, and along the way, they encounter many characters from Star Wars both familiar and brand new.

Despite the game's enormous success financially and critically, there has not been any official announcement regarding work on a sequel. EA employees have referred to the game as a “series starter,” and it would make sense to follow up the already super successful game. However, no official word has been given thus far. Also, Respawn’s involvement with the sequel is unknown. While sources have said that Respawn has the green light for a sequel, they have made no official statement. It is likely the game is still so early into development that there are not enough details to make public. It is all the more reason to check out the original game on next-gen consoles today, though!
