'Encanto' and 'Indiana Jones' Themed Encounters Coming To Disney's Animal Kingdom
With the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, this year’s Destination D23 convention brought several big updates for the Disney franchise and its worldwide parks. One of the biggest presentations came from Disney Chairman Josh D’Amaro. On September 9, D’Amaro announced that DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom will soon close to being converted to “The Tropical Americas,” a new land that will focus on the countries and cultures surrounding the equator. Imagineering Chief Creative Officer Bruce Vaughn commented that Central and South America “is a beautiful region to explore and has been the inspiration for so many magical stories over the years,” and added that the team is “looking forward to bringing all of that to life.”
The current “Dinosaur” ride in the DinoLand area of Animal Kingdom would be rethemed to an Indiana Jones ride, as it is already built similarly to the current “Indiana Jones Adventure” ride at the Disneyland Resort. “DinoRamo” will become an Encanto-themed experience, centered around the Madrigals’ magical home, Casita. Additionally, there are comments that the theater attraction “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” may close, making way for a Zootopia show.

There were also a few EPCOT changes and dates reported in celebration of Disney’s 100 years of wonder. The Imagination! Pavilion now hosts a meet-and-greet with fan-favorite Figment, which started on September 10. This brand-new debut does, however, replace the former Vanellope von Schweetz meet-and-greet. It was also disclosed that the Moana-inspired “Journey of Water” walk-through attraction will open in EPCOT’s World Nature section on October 16. This opening will mark Moana commencing dedicated meet-and-greet appearances in the same area, moving from her temporary location in Animal Kingdom. Lastly, the under-construction World Celebration neighborhood in EPCOT is scheduled to open this December.
