Empire Releases New Photo From Netflix's ‘Nimona’ Along With A Release Date
Nimona, after nearly a decade trapped in development and property rights squabbles, finally has a release date. Empire released a new image showing the titular character revealing her fangs Ballister. Nimona started as a webcomic about the shapeshifter Nimona and dark knight Ballister fighting against a shady organization called Law Enforcement and Heroics.
Back in 2015, the film was announced by 20th Century Animation, but Disney’s subsequent acquisition of Fox properties put a monkey wrench in the release plan. LGBTQIA+ themes present in the movie also contributed to Disney’s reluctance to release the film.

The initial company behind the film, Blue Sky Studios, closed in 2021 further driving the project into oblivion. But Nimona would find new life when Annapurna Pictures bought the rights and teamed up with Netflix to release the picture.
Movie director Troy Quane described the character Nimona as a “powerful little chaotic disruptor” and the story as “strong, in-your-face, female-led punk.” The other director Nick Bruno described how the film used a mix of 2D and 3D animation with objects having more details when they’re close to the camera.
Netflix also released a sneak peek that reveals the film will release on their platform on June 30, 2023. Empire promises a full interview with the Nimona creators in their Ahsoka issue that will be released in July.
