While not one of the longest-running online games of all time, after being released over a decade ago, Star Wars: The Old Republic is certainly one of the longest-running actively updated MMOs there is. Over the nearly 12 years since the game was released at the end of 2011, it has received numerous expansions, and undergone significant changes since its release. Overall, it’s been a generally well-received game.

Now, EA is looking to hand off the reins to a third-party developer to shift more focus toward its other major IPs. According to IGN, EA, and Broadsword Online Games have signed a letter of intent, with a formal deal expected to be finalized as early as this month.

If fans are concerned, there doesn’t seem to be a need, as the current head of Broadsword Online Games is Rob Denton, a name that should be familiar to SWTOR fans, as he was VP of BioWare and worked on the game during its early days. BioWare, a subsidiary of EA, has been the lead developer on the MMO since the beginning.

Broadsword Online Games is the current developer of other well-known MMOs like Dark Age of Camelot and Ultima Online. The current slate of the core of the development team is expected to move with the game to Broadsword. While the article says that those that remain with EA will have the opportunity to look for roles elsewhere in the company, in the current economy of the entertainment industry, they may face layoffs.

While EA will remain the game’s publisher, the switch to Broadsword will make BioWare shift to other focuses, like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, both of which are currently developing new games.

With a new group at the helm, SWTOR charts an unknown future with the hope of continuing it’s decade-long success.
