It has been almost two years since the latest attempt at adapting the classic sci-fi novel Dune into a movie. Dune premiered in theaters in 2021 with a simultaneous release on HBO Max. Denis Villeneuve’s interpretation became perhaps the most successful adaptation of the book to date. Its success led Warner Bros. to greenlight the second part, which began production in the summer of 2022. This week, attendees at CinemaCon were treated to an exclusive look at the first trailer for the upcoming continuation of the story.

In tune with the book, the trailer shows Paul (Timothée Chalamet) with blue eyes, an effect of the spice-heavy diet on Arrakis. The last we saw of Paul, he and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) had been taken in by the Fremen, the indigenous humans who live in the planet’s harsh deserts and use the monstrous sandworms to get around. One of the shots in the trailer shows Paul cementing his role among the Fremen by riding on the massive sandworm. Jessica now bears face tattoos as she assumed her new role as the Fremen’s Reverend Mother. Paul’s eventual love interest, Chani (Zendaya) is also featured in the trailer.

Director Denis Villeneuve has said that part two is the far more action-packed half of the film, describing it as a war movie. He has tracked pretty closely with the book, which indeed features more action in the second half as Paul and the Fremen launch a guerilla war against the Harkonnen after they killed his father and drove him and his mother into the desert to die. The latter part of the book also follows Paul in his transformation from heir to House Atreides into the Fremen messianic leader, the Lisan al Gaib.

Dune: Part Two has wrapped filming and is set to release on November 3, 2023.
