The latest Dragon Ball film, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, has ki-blasted a 23-year-old record for anime films in the United States. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero opened in US theaters on August 19 and scored $10.8 million on its opening day alone, beating the previous record held by Pokémon: The First Movie (1999). It is also currently projected to beat Demon Slayer: Mugen Train's US opening weekend, with a projected $21-26 million box office turnout.

Reactions to this news were swift, with famed Dragon Ball YouTuber Geekdom101 tweeting the following:

The film also beat out Universal's Beast and Sony's Bullet Train, and is currently at #1 for this weekend at the box office. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is currently screening in 3,900 screens, making it the widest release for Crunchyroll. It has also already scored $18 million at the international box office and will continue to roll out into other countries over the weekend, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Anime films have seen a huge rise in popularity over the years, and this latest film from one of if not the largest anime and manga franchise in the world is continuing to follow that trend.
