The ongoing legal battle between the state of Florida and the House of Mouse continues as The Walt Disney Co. filed an amendment in their lawsuit against Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis, citing a few of the governor’s most recent comments. The amended document begins with a quote from DeSantis himself, saying, “This all started, of course, with our parents’ rights bill.” The Walt Disney Company hopes to prove the governor’s efforts to revoke a thirty-year theme park development agreement are retaliatory against the company.

The amended document states, “The State’s actions over the last two weeks are the latest strikes. At the Governor’s bidding, the State’s oversight board has purported to ‘void’ publicly noticed and duly agreed development contracts, which had laid the foundation for billions of Disney’s investment dollars and thousands of jobs. Days later, the State Legislature enacted, and Governor DeSantis signed legislation rendering these contracts immediately void and unenforceable. These government actions were patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional.”

The 30-year-old agreement allows The Walt Disney Company total control over the Reedy Creek Improvement District, which holds the company’s Florida resort property. Governor DeSantis made legislation empowering him to appoint members to the county’s district board.

Within the district, Disney is able to govern itself as it sees fit. At this point in the lawsuit, DeSantis is threatening to establish new taxes on the parks, along with toll roads leading up to the company’s resorts.

This story is ongoing.
