“If you think you might be one of us, my advice is, turn away while you still can.”

D23 has been releasing a lot of teasers and announcements all weekend, but one of the most exciting for book lovers is the announcement from the Disney+ Percy Jackson series. All week, Percy Jackson author Rick Riordan has been teasing on Twitter that something big would be coming out at D23, but no one knew exactly what it was. During the Percy Jackson panel today, fans were treated to an appearance by Rick Riordan himself (who is also a producer on the show), along with the first public appearance of the main three of the Percy Jackson cast: Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth Chase), and Aryn Simhadri (Grover Underwood). Those in attendance cheered as the teaser trailer for the series was revealed.

Fans of the books will immediately recognize Percy’s words in the voiceover. They are slightly different wording of the first few paragraphs of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. This shows that Disney will be sticking much closer to the books than the Percy Jackson movies did.

The clip showed short glimpses of Percy and Camp Half-Blood. The woods of Vancouver, Canada lend a gorgeous backdrop for Camp Half-Blood. Among shots of campers and cabins, we spotted the iconic Camp Half-Blood orange T-shirt and the front of what could only be Poseiden’s cabin (as Percy was standing all alone, staring up at it). There was also a quick shot of campers in Greek armor, which may be the Capture the Flag scene that was alluded to in previously leaked pictures. However, we have yet to see any footage of Annabeth or Grover.

While Disney sadly did not give a release date with the teaser trailer drop, it is safe to say, from Rick Riordan’s updates on his blog and this trailer, that we may be seeing the series as early as summer 2023. Hopefully, this teaser is the start of much more to come!
