Disney Announces A New Expansion Of Its Deal With Kodansha For Anime on Disney+
Anime fans lately have had to deal with the changing world of anime streaming, especially following the merger of Funimation and Crunchyroll. Sure, Netflix has a strong place, but it was looking like the arena was needing more competition. Here comes Disney as the new challenger, revealed the expansion of its partnership with Japanese publishing titan Kodansha to bring more anime to Disney+.
The expanded partnership includes co-producing a growing slate of anime originals in addition to licensing exclusive anime titles based on Kodansha-produced manga. This starts with Tokyo Revengers: Christmas Showdown Arc, which will premiere exclusively on Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar in January 2023. It’s not quite clear if this is for American audiences, as at the annual APAC Content Showcase where this was announced, Disney shared that the “total hours of locally-produced Asian content streamed on Disney+ is now eight times more than it was just a year ago.”

The APAC Content Showcase is a two-day event where over 50 local and global titles are showcased to the press and partners in Singapore with the company’s top local management in attendance. Global titles are the ones considered domestic to an American audience, the output of its main studios, including Marvel and Pixar, all of which were previously shown at D23.
