Diego Luna Breaks Down Why Season 2 Of 'Star Wars: Andor' Covers Four Years
The first season of Andor saw massive success as it ushered in a new style of Star Wars shows, taking a grittier approach. The series began five years before A New Hope, showing off a new angle of origin for the Rebellion and a character key to Rogue One. The second season will be the last of the series, and it will cover a span of 4 years, which is quite the contrast to the first season.
In an interview between Perri Nemiroff and Andor star Diego Luna, the actor explains why they’re taking this approach. Luna said, “It’s not because of us. It’s because of Rogue One. I mean, I also have to look close enough to Rogue One. Can you imagine me in 10 years pretending to be the [character] I was 20 years ago?” They’re functioning with a time constraint, and the production process eats a lot of it.

The overall process is extremely extensive. Taking time to do something right makes that time absolutely worth it, but it’s still a factor. From writing to pre-production to the actual recording, Luna broaches this, explaining why time is such a consideration in the following statement:
“We didn’t want this to end up being an animated series. I am who I am, and Tony Gilroy has to be the writer of this. We cannot be doing this for 10 years. Basically, the first season took four years. The second will take a little less, but he has to write 12 episodes… That’s not easy either. So it’s a long journey. Each season takes three [to] four years of my life and of Tony Gilroy’s life.”
No release date has been given for Andor season 2, however, recording began back in late November. Season 1 can be watched, or rewatched, on Disney+.
