Batgirl returns? It seems the high-profile comic book movie that Warner Bros. suddenly shelved may not be completely gone after all. In the wake of the film’s cancellation, the entire internet has been in an uproar over such a casual disregard of so much time, work and money. The film, led by Moroccan directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, was set to star Leslie Grace as the titular heroine and the one and only Michael Keaton as the Batman himself. With music by Natalie Holt and a budget of at least $90 million, the movie had a lot behind it and a lot going for it. Sadly, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav pulled the nearly finished film from any kind of release in favor of a tax write-down for the company. In response, thousands of fans have been calling for an official release through the hashtag #ReleaseBatgirl. While Batgirl’s public fate is still up in the air, there seem to be a few (albeit private) screenings for the film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Batgirl is allegedly being screened for a small group of people who either worked on or were connected to the film. These include the cast and crew and a couple representatives and executives. The screenings have reportedly been described as “funeral screenings,” as those selected would get to view the film for a final time before being either stored away or deleted entirely by Warner Bros. Discovery. While this isn’t the type of screening many hoped for, this is a step toward the film being viewable by the public. Internet buzz around Batgirl is far from dying down, as DC fans and notable celebrities continue to push for either an official theatrical release or, at the very least, a quiet release on HBO Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s cancellations have inarguably damaged the corporation’s public reputation, and David Zaslav continues to face backlash for his various controversial decisions as CEO.

Even if these screenings do remain private, one thing is sure. People want to see Batgirl. Even if the film is never officially released, there is little doubt that the public will find a way to see the movie in the internet age. Try as Warner Bros. Discovery might, the hype around Batgirl doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon. So even if the company does kill the project, that doesn’t the fandom can’t still save it.
