Despite Evidence To The Contrary, Nintendo Denies Switch 2 Rumors
The Nintendo Switch, one of the best-selling Nintendo, and gaming, consoles of all time, was released in 2017. Its unique design sought to be a bridge between the old, handheld consoles of the past, with the modern, powerful consoles of today. While it may have lagged behind the Xbox and PlayStation in overall power, its versatility and stellar game library helped it secure its place as one of the most popular consoles around.
Lately, word has been swirling about the console reaching the end of its generational life, which of course then leads to speculation on the next generation. Due to the lawsuits surrounding Microsoft’s (now complete) acquisition of Activision-Blizzard, documents revealed that companies had been briefed on Nintendo’s next-generation console. There were also reports that the system was showcased at a recent convention. Despite this information, however, Nintendo is claiming these are just rumors and denies this information.

The details about what is being dubbed the Switch 2 are light but give a hint at the possible capabilities of the next generation console that Nintendo denies. Kotaku speculates that it’s merely a business decision, to avoid hurting current-generation Switch sales during the 2023 holiday season. In the reports that claim the Switch 2 was demonstrated, it was done with a “beefier” version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Other reports also claim the system will have the power of the Xbox One or PlayStation 4. While that seems odd for the next generation to be older than the current generation of rival systems, it is also speculated that the rumored Switch 2 will make use of technology like Nvidia’s DLSS AI resolution improvement.
If Kotaku is correct in Nintendo wanting to avoid hurting holiday sales, and the expected release of next holiday for the rumored system, there will likely be more news in the new year.
